Jig drastically reduces TIG welding job time

A bespoke TIG welding jig has reduced time taken to position and manually weld eight bosses around a 1.7m diameter cylinder to just 30min, removing a bottleneck within the customer's factory.

A bespoke TIG welding jig has made by design and contract manufacturing specialist, Holifields, for an OEM that needed to reduce the time taken to position and manually weld eight bosses around the periphery of a 1.7m diameter cylinder.

The jig has succeeded in cutting the previous scribing, boss location and welding time from three hours to just 30 minutes, eliminating a bottleneck within the factory.

The OEM now asks its tube supplier to deliver each cylindrical length with three lines scribed by laser around its periphery.

The lines are used as datums for positioning the jig, which was produced using lightweight aluminium parts to facilitate handling by the welder.

Reversible positioning fingers project at right angles from either side of a central spar to fix the position of the bosses, which are two-part sub-assemblies also made by Abingdon-based Holifields.

At either end of the spar is a 124mm square block, which has been cut by water jet from 50mm thick aluminium and then milled with a radius identical to that of the cylinder so that the jig may be clamped firmly onto the OD during welding.
