Linear actuator moves loads vertically
A new form of linear actuator based on the belt-drive principle - so that the carriage is fixed and the cylinder moves - provides highly dynamic vertical motion of loads.
A new form of linear actuator has been developed by Hoerbiger-Origa that provides highly dynamic vertical motion of loads Based on the belt-drive principle, the OSE-BV is designed so that the carriage is fixed and the cylinder moves - the reverse of the usual configuration

Mechanical engineers avoid the public gaze
Ray Barnes, managing director of pneumatics and linear motion specialist Hoerbiger Origa, discusses his concern that engineers are not getting enough recognition.
The load is most likely to be positioned at the lower end of the cylinder, although other locations are easily accommodated, and may for instance be a gripper jaw, such as used in a small parts pick and place robot.
The carriage houses the drive motor (typically a servo, but with stepper and induction motor options), gearbox and drive shaft that form the prime mover of the actuator.
It also contains a pair of idlers wheels, over which the drive belt pass to engage with the drive shaft.
In conventional fashion, the belt extends the length of the cylinder; in this case the pulleys at both ends being idlers rather than driven.
An integral ball bearing guide ensures smooth motion of the actuation.
The OSE-BV offers the advantage over conventional actuators or being compact in size and having a low dynamic weight because the relatively heavy carriage forms a static load.
These factors allow high speed operations to be sustained, such as is required in a high volume packaging line and means that the space envelope required, even for a multi-axis system, is minimal.
Currently the OSE-BV is available in 20mm and 25mm bore sizes, with larger sizes up to 64mm being introduced through early 2006.
The standard stroke length is quoted at 500mm but virtually any length can be specified up to 1000 with specials available above that.
The OSE-BV completes Hoerbiger-Origa's portfolio of standard and special linear actuators and is compatible with all other OS actuators, sharing standard sizes, standard mountings and fixing and many common parts, subsystems and accessories. Request a free brochure from Hoerbiger-Origa ...
