A hugely successful project to install a Honeywell PlantScape process control and information system on a DuPont Melinar plant at Wilton, UK, prompted praise for Honeywell from the DuPont project manager "We were delighted with all aspects of the project, from the suitability of the Honeywell solution through to the functionality provided," commented Gary Allinson of DuPont

"In addition, the project was completed on time and kept to its very tight budget, all thanks to the high quality of the Honeywell engineering team." Honeywell's engineers achieved the changeover to the PlantScape system in a single day.

Said Allinson, "I confess I was dreading the changeover, having heard of communications and software problems that had plagued a similar project on a neighbouring plant on the Wilton site, where a systems integrator - not Honeywell - had replaced a PDP11 with another vendor's system.

By contrast, the Melinar project was switched over to the Honeywell PlantScape system and commissioned without any problems, thanks to an excellent Honeywell project team." The PlantScape system interfaces with various analogue and digital inputs through its onboard cards as well communicating via serial links with two Modicon PLCs that control the plant.

"The operators like the look and feel of the PlantScape interface," observed Allinson.

"It's graphics are good and it's very user-friendly when accessing plant data, programming and making changes." The PlantScape data is used by plant operators and much of it is also transmitted in real-time to DuPont's Management Information System, where its prime purpose is for product quality tracking.

"Melinar is a Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) resin, produced as granules for manufacturers of soft drink containers," explained Gary Allinson.

"It is manufactured to a specific intrinsic viscosity (IV) which is monitored using data derived from the PlantScape system.

Each load is tracked through the plant and graded according to the data received.

Good reliable data therefore has a direct impact on plant performance" DuPont chose PlantScape to replace a DEC PDP11 computer that was used for data acquisition and reporting on the Melinar plant.

The PDP11 had become unreliable and spare parts were difficult to obtain.

Since PlantScape was introduced by Honeywell in June 1997, it has proved repeatedly to deliver value and performance that cannot be matched by other control systems.

PlantScape features a Honeywell hybrid controller and a Microsoft Windows NT operator station to combine the best features of open control and PLC systems, integrating Fieldbus, existing controllers, enterprise solutions and OLE for Process Control (OPC).

It is an open, cost-effective, scaleable solution for hybrid control, integrating batch, discrete and continuous process control in one system.

The PlantScape family includes PlantScape Process, featuring the Honeywell hybrid controller; PlantScape SCADA for dispersed, remote or unmanned operations; and PlantScape Vista, an affordable, entry-level human/machine interface, sold as a stand-alone or as part of a system.
