Horn UK is expanding its manufacturing facilities at Ringwood A second CNC insert grinding machine is already operational, to be followed by a third in April 2003

A new laser engraving machine is also on order to enable in-house marking of special inserts.

Graham Bourton, Horn UK's commercial manager, comments.

"The new grinding machine has been installed to produce special cutting edge profiles on Type 312 triangular inserts.

To date we have been producing these using manually operated optical profile grinders (OPG).

However the CNC machine is much faster.

Even on profiles where it remains necessary to use the OPG the CNC machine can generate a semi-finished blank, providing faster turn around overall and making more effective use of our OPG skills." Ringwood's first CNC grinder is used for general production of Type 217 indexable inserts, most of which are exported back to Paul Horn in Germany.

By contrast, the latest machine - which incorporates a second high speed spindle for edge preparation - is almost exclusively for local production.

So will the third, which will expand special insert manufacturing capabilities to include groove milling profiles and also provide enhanced wheel dressing facilities.

"These investments are intended to give Horn UK a much higher level of self sufficiency for special insert production." Bourton added.

"That will improve our response and allow us to service larger contracts while simultaneously easing the production workload on the parent company.".
