Grooving specialist is to launch an end milling system that features a replaceable carbide milling insert, which locates in a steel head brazed to the end of a carbide shank.

Grooving specialist Paul Horn is set to cause a stir at the Milan EMO with the launch of its DM end milling system The design features a replaceable carbide milling insert which locates in a steel head brazed to the end of a carbide shank

Location of the insert is by a proprietary locking system which provides extremely high levels of cutting stability, insert positioning repeatability and security.

Horn is initially making the DM 10 and DM 12 systems available.

These offer cutting diameters of 10mm and 12mm, with either cylindrical or conical shanks.

Four different insert profiles are offered though this will increase as the DM program develops.

The DM system - which has been comprehensively tested in Horn's toolroom - is capable of being applied to a wide range of applications.

As an end milling system it brings the uncommon advantage of rapid highly precise insert replacement in situ to high performance rotary tooling.

Horn will also be demonstrating its recently introduced range of broaching tools in Milan.

Broaching is usually carried out as a second operation though some highly specialised applications utilising costly customised tooling have seen it included in a turning or mill turning cycle.

The Horn Type SB 105 and SH117 tooling is applicable to most CNC lathes using turret or platen type tooling and offers the opportunity to economically apply the broaching process to small volume production runs using a high quality, proven proprietary system.

The system can to broach longitudinal grooves from 2 mm wide by 2 mm deep up to 24mm wide by 8.5mm deep.

Other highlights among Horn's Milan exhibits will include the expanding range of sliding head/Swiss-type tooling.

As well as the successful range of polygon turning tools using the Type 264 insert, Horn has developed a wide range of specialised holders to enable its grooving technology to be more widely applied to this class of machine.

The name of Paul Horn is widely associated with the company's capability to solve problems that other suppliers walk away from.

One such is the machining of brass, in particular MS58.

To improve the machineability of this alloy Horn has developed an insert capable of grooving and side turning while chipbreaking.

Type 259 inserts have two cutting edges and are available in widths of 3mm and 4mm.

Grooves from 10mm to 18mm deep can be machined at depth of cut up to twice the insert diameter, providing a highly economical machining solution.

Alongside these products Horn will be displaying many other examples from its immense catalogue of proven groove turning, groove milling and thread milling solutions, ranging from Super Mini - capable of machining within bores down to 0.7mm diameter - upward.
