Broaching keyways performed in standard
CNC lathes
Broaching system for use on turret and platen-type lathes is believed to be the first proprietary system of its type and avoids having to broach keyways and slots on a second operation machine.
The new Horn broaching system for use on turret and platen-type lathes is the first proprietary system of its type Broaching of internal slots and keyways has hitherto required either a second operation on a specialist broaching machine, or recourse to expensive customised tooling

Insert grooving tools halve machining time
Substitution of a machining process using an insert type grooving/slotting cutter has reduced machining time on highly alloyed aerospace components from around 100 hours to 44 hours.
Dedicated tooling benefits sliding head users
Users of sliding head CNC lathes can benefit from using dedicated internal grooving and boring tool holders and adaptors as well as a side turning and part-off system and polygon mill-turning tools.
With the new system, Horn UK is providing an off-the-shelf solution offering full repeatability of tool dimensions and machining performance.
Moreover, it is compatible with any modern CNC lathe including sliding head machines.
Horn broaching tool types SB105 and SH117 are engineered to machine keyways conforming with DIN138 in bores from 8.0mm diameter upwards.
The inserts use proven Horn insert and holder technology developed for the existing Type 105 Super Mini and Type H117 form tool programmes.
Three dedicated broaching tool holders are available, one for Super Mini with shank diameter of 25mm, and two for Type SH117 with shank diameters of 25mm and 32mm respectively.
Broaching slot width with Super Mini ranges from 2.0mm to 4.0mm with length, determined by the insert, of up to 12mm.
Maximum depth of the groove is 2.0mm and the system is suitable for use in bores from 8.0mm diameter upwards.
Inserts for Type 117 broaching applications are of trapezoidal section and locate positively in as shaped pocket on the nose of the holder secured by a central grub screw.
Type 117 tooling is designed for groove widths from 6.0mm to 24.0mm and the tool holder allows maximum groove length of 50mm.
Maximum groove depth is 8.5mm and the tooling is suitable for use in bores from 22.0mm diameter upwards.
