The latest CNC programming capabilities of Open Mind's hyperMILL CAM software, with its 19 dedicated 5-axis machining strategies, were presented to 60 visitors at a one-day open house held on 26th February at the High Wycombe showroom of vertical machining centre company, Hurco Some visitors were existing Hurco users who witnessed demonstrations of the new VM-1 and VMX42 machines on show and as a result, orders for two machines were placed

Hurco increases machining centre size
Hurco has introduced a larger vertical-spindle, 3- to 5-axis machining centre suited in particular to mould and die manufacture, aerospace components, job shop applications and short-run production.
One-stop EDM toolmaker buys CNC milling
An EDM toolmaker-come-general subcontractor wanting to expand into prismatic metalcutting has bought a Hurco machining centre to offer a one-stop service
Key messages as regards hyperMILL were the ease of use and advanced collision avoidance as well as its interoperability with all major CAD systems.
Inclusion in the new release (version 7) of so-called RapidResult technology was also stressed.
It allows beginners to program faster because they enjoy a high level of support, while experts also become more efficient as they can control the options and switch off functions they do not need.
Demonstrations on the MXU 40, Hurco's first-ever full 5-axis machining centre, illustrated the breadth of applications for this technology.
Said Adrian Smith of Open Mind, "Many believe that 5-axis machining is exclusively for complex moulds and aerospace parts, but this is not the case.
"Our visitors saw how relatively simple components normally produced by 3-axis milling can be machined significantly faster and often in fewer set-ups using fully interpolative 5-axis routines.
A 40 per cent reduction in cycle time to achieve the same standard of finish is not unusual.
"We also demonstrated Open Mind's 'stepping stone' approach whereby a 3-axis user can progress to full 5-axis programming via 3 + 2-axis implementation of hyperMILL.
It is often not realistic to make such a big transition in one step." Visitors were able to see CNC programs being verified and optimised using CG Tech's market leading VERICUT software, which in this case simulated operation of the Hurco MXU40. Request a free brochure from Hurco Europe ...
