IFS (UK) has won a contract to provide its IFS Applications integrated business management system, together with associated consultancy services, for 50 named users at Coba Plastics of Leicester, UK IFS secured the contract after a rigorous selection process during which Coba ranked IFS higher than a competitor that is often viewed as the global market leader for business software

Rapid implementation is anticipated, with a target 'go live' date of August 2003.

Coba Plastics manufactures extrusions from polymers and thermoplastic elastomers, many of which are destined for the automotive industry.

A separate division produces safety matting for sale directly and through distributors.

The company has enjoyed consistent steady growth since it was formed in 1966, and the growth is forecast to continue for the foreseeable future.

However, when Coba's senior managers realised that the company's existing software tools were in danger of becoming a brake on progress, the decision was taken to invest in a fully integrated IT system.

Mark Cook, Managing Director, states: "It is imperative that we install a comprehensive system that can cope with the demands of our business as it expands and gets more complex.

We have every confidence that IFS Applications will meet our needs, improving our overall efficiency and helping us to win new customers at home and abroad through a more proactive approach to sales." Barrie Dowsett, Coba's Financial Director and Project Sponsor for the implementation, adds: "IFS Applications will improve our plant utilisation by a minimum of 10 per cent, as well as allowing us to grow our business without the need for more employees.

A further direct benefit will be a reduction in stockholding that will release more working capital." In addition to bringing about behind-the-scenes benefits, IFS Applications will also help Coba to improve its customer service.

Having real-time production data available will ensure that accurate lead times can be quoted by the sales team, and customers will be able to track their orders through the production process.

Looking to the future, the implementation of IFS Applications also paves the way for Coba's planned e-business strategy.

Coba was seeking a versatile IT system that would cope with financial management, sales and manufacturing management functions.

Cardinal requirements included, mixed-mode manufacturing, JIT deliveries to a worldwide customer base, and stocking in remote warehouses - including one in Slovakia.

Mark Goodwin, Project Manager, comments: "We looked at a wide variety of systems, from small, little-known suppliers, to mid-range suppliers and even the perceived market-leader.

But IFS shone through with its state-of-the-art modular software system that can be implemented quickly, and it also came across as easily the most professional organisation.".
