Within nine months of setting up its fast response, round-the-clock CNC machining service, Impact Precision has established a niche for machining plastics components to meet growing demand.
Round-the-clock precision subcontracting
Impact Precision's round-the-clock precision subcontract business has been expanded with new machine tools including a nine-axis Daewoo Puma MX 2500 ST mill/turn centre.
Impact Precision's managing director Paul Cobb maintains: "Everything has been structured to be a small, agile business to achieve high quality, short lead time production and providing a total milling and CNC turning service.
Our team is small, but highly qualified in the multi-axis machining of difficult materials." Production at the 2,000ft2 machine shop is centred around two Citizen L20 CNC sliding head automatic lathes, three HAAS VF2 vertical machining centres, each with a fourth-axis and multi-vice workholding and a Daewoo Puma 200 M with driven tools.
Run by a workforce of five, Impact Precision is focusing on providing a multi-axis CNC service involving as far as possible 'one-hit' strategies.
Already, complex components from aluminium, stainless steel and brass have been produced with some contracts involving direct to line kanban service.
And with the latest LNS barfeed system fitted to the Citizen L20s, even small diameter plastic rod has been machined without any problems associated with whipping at high speed.
As Cobb describes, one job involved turning and rigid tapping 3,000 stainless steel components.
This batch was completed over a weekend, largely unmanned against a tight schedule and, due to the setting and stability of continuous machining, tolerance drift was measured in just a few microns.
As part of the setup, off-line programming and DNC linking has been established to all machines with flexible quick to set fixturing.
Standard tooling is used as far as possible to enable a fast response and maximise machine utilisation.
And for delivery, an overnight service has been established to anywhere in the UK.
