Finland beats the Best of British

Finland's Lahti Institute of Design's impressive performance in the Student Starpack Awards 2007 was recognised when presented with The Eric Dickens Memorial Award at the Student Starpack Awards ceremony held during Total Processing and Packaging at the Birmingham NEC, on May 15, 2007 The accolade is presented to the college with the most overall success in the annual competition

Presented at the same time as the Student awards, the Schools Starpack Awards are designed to complement students' studies as part of the national curriculum and to encourage children to consider packaging and packaging design as a career choice.

The Student and Schools Starpack Awards are organised by IOP: The Packaging Society, a division of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), to promote excellence in packaging and design talent in universities, colleges and schools.

Student Starpack Awards judges examined 231 entries and awarded 9 Gold Stars, 13 Silver Stars, 22 Bronze Stars, 19 commended and 14 Sponsor Awards.

The Lahti Institute of Design, Finland, walked away with 24 awards - Best in Show, four Gold Stars, two Silver Stars, seven Bronze Stars, five commended and five sponsor awards.

A quirky piece of packaging that puts the fun back into Easter, entered by Monika Osinska, Lahti Institute of Design, took Best in Show; a Gold Star and the sponsored Marks and Spencer/Korsnas Frovi Award for her Easter Egg Carton Pack.

The brief called on students to explore the properties of Frovi board to create a single material pack that was novel and interactive but with an eye to a responsible approach to environmentally issues.

Hanna Isseyegh, Packaging Co-ordinator, Marks and Spencer commented: "This pack has great shelf impact".

"It is an innovative concept and is easily adaptable to a number of applications." Maija Hyppola, another student from the Lahti Institute of Design, took a Gold Star for a very professional cartonboard concept for a Postal Egg; and the third Gold Star went to Kelly-Marie Hodges, Reigate School of Art, Design and Media, for a sophisticated carton featuring a sprung concertina insert that provides the support and surround for the egg.

Mirroring its senior counterpart - The Starpack Industry Awards - the impact of packaging on the environment was high on the agenda.

The Sponsor Award from Marks and Spencer and WRAP (the Waste and Resources Action Programme), received a high number of entries, reflecting the number of colleges and university courses that now feature sustainability in design as a key learning module.

The quality of the entries was high with the strongest entrants being those that acknowledged "environmentally friendly" packaging in its truest sense by assessing packaging reduction opportunities as well as reuse, recyclability, compostability and clear consumer labelling, said WRAP.

A number of the entrants had carefully considered what packaging components were really necessary and researched the use of sustainable materials.

The winner of the Marks and Spencer and WRAP Award was Pippa Kate Bridle from Blackpool and The Flyde College for a novel approach to packaging for cooked meats.

The pack met all aspects of the brief and the design made minimal use of flexible, compostable material held in a slim cartonboard sleeve.

The judges said that the compact yet appealing format would perform well both in transit and on-shelf.

The design took account of resealability.

Also winner of a Silver Star - Environmentally Friendly Delicatessen Pack Corrugated Secondary Pack for the Discovery Brand Yet another student from Lahti Institute of Design, Markus Toivanen, received both the Gold Star and the sponsored Smurfit Kappa Award for his in-store promotional pop up display for the Discovery Brand - famous for Tortillas, Fajita Kits and Nachos.

The judges commented that the very strong graphics, married to easy erection and disposal, showed a lot of thought.

Sponsored by Nestle and MPMA, the winners were: Ross Taylor, Reigate School of Art Design and Media, for a reusable interactive pack for premium chocolates.

The interactive game utilises the wrapped chocolates.
