Roger Evans, plant director at Schaeffler (UK) (formerly INA Bearing Company), has taken this year's Leading Wales Award, receiving a top business accolade for his leadership in the private sector.

Evans won the Leading Wales Award 2006 for his outstanding leadership in the 'Businesses with more than 250 employees' category.

Following the awards ceremony, Evans said: "On behalf of all employees at INA Llanelli, I am delighted and honoured to receive this accolade from the Leading Wales Consortium.

I believe that, to be a good leader, you have to have the humility to listen to your workforce and their ideas for improvement and to have the strength of will and belief to see initiatives through to the end." The Award scheme recognises and celebrates personal achievement in leadership and management.

The organisers believe that strong leadership in all industry sectors contributes to the growth of the Welsh economy.

The judges recognise nominees whose work has impacted positively on moving their business or organisation forward, whatever their role or responsibility.

Whether they are a volunteer, core worker, manager or executive, the Award seeks to recognise leaders at any level who have shown innovation in their approach, resulting in positive outcomes.

The engineering company Schaeffler (UK) was also involved in the search for Wales' most outstanding leaders with its sponsorship of the Team Leader Category of the Leading Wales 2006 Awards.

Kate Hartigan, Schaeffler (UK) managing director commented: "It was the leadership shown by INA company founders Dr Wilhelm and Dr Georg Schaeffler 50 years ago that set the stage for the Company's ongoing success." She continued: "Strong and capable leadership is a valuable asset to any organisation.

But having leaders who can inspire and encourage their team to use their individual skills to the organisation's benefit is invaluable, and this is why we wish to recognise those leaders with such highly prized abilities.

We congratulate Roger on demonstrating these abilities throughout his career." Barbara Chidgey, chair, Leading Wales Awards Consortium commented: "The Consortium is delighted to have the support of Schaeffler (UK) in the form of their sponsorship of the Team Leader Category of the Leading Wales Awards 2006 / Gwobrau Arwain Cymru 2006.

One of our key messages is that leadership is not just at the top of an organisation, but needs to be encouraged and developed at all levels in order to drive forward a business successfully.".
