By acquiring Renold Automotive Systems, the Schaeffler Group can now offer complete camshaft drive and timing products, including chain, belt and variable camshaft timing systems.

By acquiring Renold Automotive Systems, the Schaeffler Group's Automotive Division can now offer automotive customers complete camshaft drive and timing solutions, including chain systems, belt systems and variable camshaft timing systems The Schaeffler Group, manufacturer of bearings, linear systems and automotive components under the INA brand, last month acquired automotive chain maker Renold Automotive Systems (RAS), part of Renold group The aim of the acquisition is to further strengthen the Schaeffler Group's engine front end drive competence and maximise its complete system knowledge

With the acquisition of RAS, Schaeffler's Automotive Division will now be able to offer customers a complete chain drive system solution, including chain, tensioner and guides - from one source.

RAS is a leading innovator in its sector, developing, manufacturing and distributing a large range of chains and chain tensioners for major automotive manufacturers and to the automotive aftermarket.

The Schaeffler Group itself has also been at the forefront of chain development and manufacture for some time.

The company has already developed an innovative, tooth type chain system for an automotive customer, which not only offers longer life, but also significantly reduces noise emissions and takes up considerably less design space.

John Taylor, director and general manager Schaeffler (UK) Automotive commented on the acquisition: "Any system that connects the camshaft to the crankshaft is a critical assembly on an engine and it is already an area, together with valve train activation, where INA is a world class leading development partner and supplier.

The acquisition of Renold Automotive Systems is important because it means the Schaeffler Group now becomes a Tier One supplier of complete chain systems to automotive manufacturers.

Our automotive customers want to purchase complete chain systems from one supplier, including chains, chain tensioners and guides.

We can now fulfil this." He continued: "The acquisition also means we can fast-track our own chain development.

Renold's manufacturing facilities, coupled with our own deep drawn cup press technology, gives us first-class production facilities with which to manufacture current and future chain products." RAS employs around 700 people world-wide and has plants in Calais and St Simeon in France and smaller manufacturing and assembly businesses in the US and China.

The RAS product range includes roller and bushed roller chains. Request free introductory details about products from Schaeffler (UK) ...
