Lilly Software Associates is to offer radio frequency identification (RFID) capabilities within its Visual Enterprise product.

Lilly Software Associates, together with its business partner Loftware, has announced that it will offer existing and new customers the radio frequency identification (RFID) capabilities required to comply with the pending mandate on electronic product code (EPC) This latest development has been made possible because Lilly Software has integrated into its Visual Enterprise supply chain management system Loftware's newly released Premier Plus RFID product, offering as a result the first fully scalable system for creating RFID or smart labels

In particular, Lilly Software's joint initiative aims to help manufacturers and suppliers address the demands being made by large retail stores to adopt RFID marking and tracking systems.

For example, the US retailer Wal-Mart recently announced its plan to implement a RFID-based pallet- and case-level tracking system.

This means its top 100 suppliers will be required to comply by January 2005 and all its suppliers must follow suit by 2006.

The announcement regarding Wal-Mart's plan has resulted in efforts to standardise the global specifications for RFID tags.

Of primary concern for most companies will be the anticipated cost and resource requirements that RFID investment and implementation will place on them.

"While the EPC mandates are creating quite a stir among suppliers of major retailers, we're happy to report that our Visual Enterprise customers can readily meet the new requirements with the help of Loftware's Premier Plus RFID," said David Bennett, Vice President of Product Management, Lilly Software.

"Unlike many solutions in the market, Visual users across all industries can easily extend their current software investment to meet the new requirements." Visual Enterprise is a comprehensive end-to-end supply chain management system that focuses on helping manufacturing companies respond to the increasingly difficult demands made by their customers.

For different levels of warehouse and distribution management, companies may choose between two Lilly Software modules that are designed to fully integrate with Visual Enterprise, the company's WMS for paper-based operations and Visual DCMS, which supports RFID operations.

The availability and integration of the Loftware product into Visual Enterprise means that, when they need to, Lilly Software customers will be able to add or extend RFID capability and comply with demands made by large retailers.

Just as its partner offers choice, Loftware's solutions let customers decide whether to create labels or tags that include barcode and RFID technology, or print labels that people may read conventionally.

"Loftware's technology is a major component of Visual Enterprise's functionality in terms of shipping and distribution for our customers," said David Bennett.

"Our partnership with this dynamic company is further proof of Lilly Software's commitment to provide our customers with the tools and technology they need for success.".
