New ERP solution set to increase control over global supply chain for leading global telecomms manufacturer.

Filtronic Comtek has gone live for 250 users in the UK with a solution from the Manufacturing Essentials suite from Infor, one of the largest global providers of enterprise software Filtronic Comtek manufactures base station equipment for the major mobile phone infrastructure players and is part of the global communications and defence systems group - Filtronic

Filtronic Comtek has now gone live across its four UK production facilities in Shipley, Wolverhampton and two in Scotland, following a seven month implementation.

Now that this has been successfully completed the company is now planning to upgrade 100 users based in China later this year.

Filtronic Comtek's UK operations are primarily geared to prototyping and small scale production whereas the vast majority of its make-to-order production is conducted in China.

The new enterprise software has been installed to provide greater visibility and control over its global supply chain which involves extensive outsourcing of mechanical aluminium parts used within its base stations, prior to final assembly and testing at Filtronic.

For the last 10 years Filtronic Comtek has been running with an ERP solution from the Infor Manufacturing Essentials suite, to integrate its sales order processing, financials, inventory and manufacturing planning (Bill of Materials) processes.

This has been used in tandem with an in-house written design and Manufacturing Execution System (MES).

Mike O'Carroll, Filtronic's Group IT Manager said: "We are very happy following the upgrade".

"One of the primary reasons for moving to the latest release of software was the fact that the underlying architecture of Infor ERP SyteLine is Microsoft SQL Server".

"We developed our manufacturing control systems in house on this platform which now means we will be able to achieve tight integration between our systems".

"Automation, instead of manual intervention, will now mean we will have full control over our inventory and order shipment status on a global basis." Mike O'Carroll continued: "The new system will help us maintain the flexibility we need to cope with ever-changing customer orders".

"90% of our orders are make-to-order and customer requirements change wildly on a daily basis".

"So we need full control over our supply chain in order to keep pace and meet our global customers' demands profitably." Trevor Smith, UK MD for Infor in the UK, said: "Filtronic has been a key customer for us having first adopted our Manufacturing Essentials Solution, Infor ERP SyteLine in 1996".

"It has successfully upgraded to the latest versions of our software on a regular basis helping it to take full advantage of the extensive developments we make".

"We work with customers across all industries but the mobile telecoms industry can almost be described as unenviable as demand is so unpredictable".

"I'm delighted Infor ERP SyteLine is helping Filtronic to stay flexible in order to juggle large deviations in customer demands, globally and on a daily basis.".
