Non destructive testing for coffee
moisture

Tews Elektronik, represented in the UK by Accumen Technology, offer a range of microwave based instruments to accurately measure moisture at all stages of the coffee manufacturing process.

Tews Elektronik, represented in the UK by Accumen Technology, offers a range of microwave based instruments to accurately measure moisture at all stages of the coffee manufacturing process Working in close association with Probat, the coffee roasting machine manufacturer, as well as a leading German supermarket chain, its non-destructive process is fast, accurate and independent of colour

German government regulations, which require manufacturers to produce coffee to a specified moisture content level, have brought about the need to have accurate control over each stage of the manufacturing process.

Tews Elektronik range of instruments is ideally suited to this need.

Tews patented microwave resonance technology based instruments provide the tools to enable the manufacturer to test the product at any stage without the need for pre-processing (e.g grinding).

The moisture content of the whole product is measured, without heating, and the accuracy is not influenced by density or the surface of the product (e.g whole beans or ground coffee).

The Neumann Coffee Group successfully use Tews Elektronik products, primarily the MW3140/MW3150, to measure the moisture in green beans at-line or in the laboratory.

If on-line measurement is required further down the process, either a planar sensor, the MW3260, or an automated by-pass system, the MW3200 can be used.

The MW3200 is effective for measuring both moisture and density of ground coffee prior to packaging in order to optimise filling quality.

As well as being able to measure moisture in fresh green beans, the following results have been obtained at the various manufacturing stages using both laboratory and on-line systems: Raw Coffee(Actual results, Laboratory): - Calibration from 8% - 13% - Correlation: 0.904, Average deviation: 0.2% Roasted Coffee(Actual results, Laboratory): - Calibration from 3% - 5% - Correlation: 0.932, Average deviation: 0.13% Ground Coffee(Actual results, Laboratory): - Calibration from 3% - 5% - Correlation: 0.983, Average deviation: 0.09%.
