The commissioning of new shape control technology for a continuous tandem cold mill includes a new air bearing shape measuring roll, segmented coolant spray bars and strip width measurement.

In March 2002, Industrial Automation Services (IAS) completed the installation and commissioning of new shape control technology for the 5-stand 6-high continuous tandem cold mill at USS Posco, Pittsburg, California, USA The shape control technology incorporates software and hardware to control strip shape and includes a new air bearing shape measuring roll, segmented coolant spray bars and strip width measurement

A fire in May 2001 destroyed the existing coolant spray header and shape measurement roll and in response to UPI's request for rapid delivery, IAS developed and delivered the new shape control on time and within budget.

Very tight flatness performance guarantees were achieved over the entire range of products.

The integrated solution from IAS incorporated equipment from Shape Technology, United States Controls and ABB.
