'Achieva coating control' utilizes a proven physics-based coating mass model to generate accurate references and control knife to strip distances and stripping gas pressure.
California Steel Industries (CSI) has asked Industrial Automation Services (IAS) to design, supply and commission a zinc coating mass control system ('achieva coating control') for its No 2 hot dip galvanizing line 'Achieva coating control' uses a physics-based coating mass model to generate accurate references and control knife to strip distances and stripping gas pressure

Shape control uses air bearing measurement roll
The commissioning of new shape control technology for a continuous tandem cold mill includes a new air bearing shape measuring roll, segmented coolant spray bars and strip width measurement.
During order transitions, advanced signal processing algorithms enable the controls to estimate coating thickness within one coating gauge scan.
The resulting control actions minimize the generation of out-of-specification material.
The minimized coating standard deviation allows for zinc savings and a typical return on investment of a few months.
Coating measurement will also be upgraded via a new coating weight gauge to be supplied by IRMS.
The open architecture control system incorporates IAS's easy to maintain graphical programming interface.
The system takes advantage of IAS's considerable process know-how and local support.
Engineering design, project management, installation assistance, commissioning and operator/maintenance training will be executed from IAS's offices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, and Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.
* About IAS - situated in Newcastle, Australia and Pittsburgh, USA, IAS manufactures and markets 'Achieva Mill Automation'.
It is believed to be the world's finest range of automation and control products as well as process improvement consulting services to the flat metals industry.
The company also runs IRTC the International Rolling Technology Course twice annually and produces APT, the Advanced Personal Trainer computer based training course.
