Jenoptik appoints chief operating
officer
Jenoptik has appointed Dr Michael Mertin as ordinary member of the executive board, with from October 1, 2006, as director technology/operating business and will succeed Norbert Thiel.

Dr Mertin comes from the Zeiss Group where he has held various leading positions since 1996.
Amongst other things he was head of Technology Coatings and assistant head of the Carl Zeiss Technology Center in Oberkochen, Germany.
From 2000 to 2004 he was responsible for the 'System Technology' business area, subsequently taking over as head of research and development and technology for the 'Eye Care' strategic business unit.
Following the merger of this business unit with the US company SOLA International, since 2005 he has been responsible for technologies and processes as vice president on the board of Carl Zeiss Vision International thus newly formed.
Before starting his career at Zeiss Dr Mertin gained his degree in physics at the RWTH Aachen and subsequently his Doctorate of Engineering in the field of laser materials processing and surface technology at the Fraunhofer Institut fuer Lasertechnik (FHG-ILT [Laser Technology]).
With Alexander von Witzleben as chairman of the executive board (CEO) and Dr Mertin as director technology and COO, the executive board of Jenoptik would continue to comprise two members after the separation of the facility engineering division, said Lothar Spaeth, chairman of the supervisory board.
The two managers would focus in close cooperation on the further development and the growth of the newly structured company.
The Supervisory Board and the Management of Jenoptik would like to thank Thiel for his years of contribution towards the development and restructuring of the Thuringian technology group.
Thiel joined Jenoptik in 1998 and during the years 1998 to 2002, as managing director of the Jenoptik subsidiary Jenoptik Laser, Optik, Systeme, and as member of the executive board since June 2002 played a key role in driving forward the development of the group.
As director technology he was responsible for the former Photonics business division which, under his leadership, grew sales from EUR 268 million 2002 to EUR 401 million in fiscal year 2005.
Thiel will retain a link with the Jenoptik Group in an advisory capacity in the area of nanotechnology.
Together with his successor he will ensure a smooth transition.
"In Dr Mertin I have the help of a manager who has technology and strategic experience and has been well-acquainted with our sector for many years," said Jenoptik boss Alexander von Witzleben in welcoming the decision of the Supervisory Board on the new staff appointment.
