Lubricant improves tube-drawing finish

A John Neale product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Oct 23, 2006

Metalforming fluid was tested as an ID and OD tube-drawing lubricant and immediately surface finish improved, and later, scrap rates were significantly reduced.

John Neale continues to be surprised at the significant performance benefits which can be obtained with Superdraw ST4000P.

A stainless steel tube drawing company in USA was using two lubricants for the severe drawing of stainless steel tube.

This customer was drawing with a reduction of 50% on tube of diameters of up to 1.3/4in.

The two lubricants, one for OD and a different one for ID were apparently the best available in the USA from two of the key tube lubricant suppliers.

The customer was not fully satisfied with the performance obtained, but nothing seemed to be available to them to make improvements.

After searching on the internet the customer found that John Neale may have the capability to enhance their process.

After discussion of their application Superdraw ST4000P was recommended.

Samples were quickly dispatched for testing.

Superdraw ST4000P was tested as the ID and OD lubricant.

Immediately the operators noted improvements.

Surface finish improved.

Scrap rates were later noted to have been significantly reduced.

The lubricant also gave application enhancements, the current lubricants were thick pastes which made them difficult to apply due to the consistency, and remove.

The customer desires to use in-line cleaning and very little removes these lubricants satisfactorily.

The two current products used were often mixed up, or cross contaminated leading to even greater performance problems.

ST4000P a viscous liquid was easier to apply, cross contamination is not an issue as a single lubricant can be used for both ID and OD, and ST4000P can be used for all applications throughout the factory.

Removal with Solvent TMA our proven non-VOC, non-hazardous, TCE replacement is straight forward and in-line cleaning easily facilitated.
