Vanishing oils work with deep drawing

Working with a pressing company in the West Midlands, UK, John Neale has done significant development work to create vanishing oils with the performance of traditional viscous forming lubricants.
The requirements were challenging for this application: dry residue to remove the requirement of degreasing prior to upholstery; residue must allow for welding through with no fuming problems; rapidly drying; and be able to lubricate sufficiently well to form a 3in (75mm) deep draw in mild steel in a single stage and involve no significant cost increase.
The customer tested vanishing oils from many suppliers and found standard vanishing oils did not have the capability to do the deep draw, the components in every case gave split components.
Working closely with the customer and conducting a series of trials, a blend of additives was developed to give the difficult combination of performance characteristics the customer required.
It leaves a dry film on evapouration, it is very low viscosity and so reduces consumption and makes application easier, the deep draw is accomplished with ease and the lubricant dries at an appropriate speed for the application.
Welding through the dry film does not cause any problems and the components are suitable for customer handling without any requirement for degreasing.
