Diamond machining delivers ultra-smooth
mirrors
Proprietary diamond machining enables the production on-axis, off-axis and free form mirrors with a surface roughness of less than 3nm RMS and a slope accuracy better than 70 microrad.
Kaleido Technology ApS has upgraded its proprietary diamond machining capabilities enabling it to produce on-axis, off-axis and free form mirrors (up to 700mm diameter) with a surface roughness of less than 3nm RMS and a slope accuracy of better than 70 microrad In addition to large and complex ultra-smooth mirrors the geometrical freedom inherent in Kaleido's unique machining set-up enables it to produce off-axis parts with very long working distances that cannot be done by on-axis turning

Commenting upon the advance - Dr Palle Gelzer Dinesen (chief sales officer and co-founder) said: "We are seeing an immediate advantage from the two-fold improvement in achievable surface roughness for our automotive, aerospace and military customers.
We have also seen early interest from researchers involved with X-ray and short wavelength applications where the ultra-smooth surfaces could give significant advantage." Senior technical expert and co-founder Dr Christian Holme of Kaleido Technology said: "We are very pleased with our machining system performance after the upgrade.
It pushes the capabilities of our cutting-edge diamond-machining capabilities even further enabling us to pursue new applications with extreme requirements.
Along with our proprietary environment feed-back system for extended accuracy and our proprietary machine control system including direct processing of CAD-files, this accuracy upgrade really gives a technological edge in the ultra-precision optics area." Using their ultra-precision machining centre, Kaleido Technology is able to take a CAD file directly from a customer to produce prototype and production quantity mirrors to the highest degree of accuracy and surface finish.
Kaleido Technology is a leading European manufacturer of OEM discrete and integrated optical components and sub-systems.
Through innovative production methods the company seeks to provide high precision optics and optical systems at competitive prices.
A new datasheet describing machining of large and complex ultra-smooth mirrors is available from the Kaleido Technology Web site.
