A highly secure tool storage and tracking system, ideal for high value tooling, helps manufacturers save money and improve efficiency in the workplace.

Kardex Systems has developed a highly secure tool storage and tracking system to help manufacturers save money and improve efficiency in the workplace The Point of Dispense (POD) unit is ideal for high value, high volume tooling such as indexible inserts, drills, taps and reamers as well as general workshop items

Thanks to a user identification system, companies can achieve better management and tracking of disposable tooling items.

To dispense any of the available items in the POD, operators insert their personal ID card in to the integral card reader and key in the item number, which is clearly displayed on the front of the machine to help minimise picking errors.

By recording details of the operator and the items removed, companies are in a position to regain control of the costs.

Where vendor managed inventory agreements are in place this information is downloaded regularly by an outside tool supplier, using a hand held scanning device, and transferred via an infrared port into the central computer to produce usage stock reports and invoices.

This will mean that companies will only pay for the stock they have actually used.

Back at the distribution centre, stock is then replenished accordingly by the supplier, leaving the customer to concentrate on what is important - production.

"Using stock freely is a common occurrence in the workplace causing companies to lose money unnecessarily," Ray Butcher, manager of Kardex Systems, Integrated Supply Division.

"The purpose of the POD is to help companies improve their balance sheet by helping them track and monitor stock more closely.

"Units can be positioned throughout the factory, saving staff from leaving the production line to walk across the site to the central stores and ensuring they only take the amount of items needed for a particular job.

As a result, companies will reduce the amount of stock that gets lost or goes missing," continued Butcher.

The POD can hold a maximum of 70 individual items and will vend up to a maximum of 30 of each item.

Measuring just 72in high, 29in wide and 35in deep, the unit is designed to store and retrieve parts in a very small area of floor space.
