Welds contribute to largest single mast yacht
High technology welding equipment contributed to the successful build the World's largest single masted yacht and composite (carbon and glass fibre) vessel launched last year.
High technology welding equipment supplied by Kemppi (UK), the Bedford based subsidiary of Finland's Kemppi OY, to VT Shipbuilding has helped to build the Ron Holland designed 'Mirabella V', the World's largest single masted yacht and composite (carbon and glass fibre) vessel ever built, which was launched at their Southampton yard on 26th November 2003.
In December Mirabella V was towed to VT Shipbuilding's new facilities in Portsmouth, to be fitted out, including having her mast stepped.
The 60 tonne fin of the keel was inserted into the keel box and then the yacht was dry-docked.
Three Kemppi PRO Evolution 4200 digital arc welding power sources using Promig 200-MC wire feed units with a team of welders were called in for a 4 day, round the clock operation to MIG weld the 91 tonne bulb of the keel to the yacht's lifting keel.
PRO Evolution is a 'slim line' designed digitally controlled, software based, modular welding system for MIG, synergic MIG, pulsed MIG, TIG, pulsed TIG and MMA welding and is used on all weldable materials including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and other more exotic materials such as CUSi3 and duplex steels.
This 151 tonnes lifting keel, including the bulb, has required considerable in-depth research and engineering, both for the structural integrity of the 10m deep fin and the system requirements and mechanism to lift such a keel.
Mirabella V is owned by US Businessman Joe Vittoria and has been designed for the luxury corporate and private charter market around the Caribbean and Mediterranean.
With a completed displacement of 750 tonnes, her statistics are pioneering as well as awesome.
She has a 31 tonnes, 90 metre mast; the largest carbon fibre mast ever designed making her too tall to pass under the Severn Bridge, the Forth Road Bridge and Tower Bridge in London or the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
She will have something like 3,000m2 of sail providing speeds in excess of 20 knots when sailing downwind.
With an overall length of 75m and a 14.8m beam, she has 14 cabins for guests and crew, a 600 bottle wine cellar and an outdoor cinema.
She will also have her own 29ft motor launch, jet skis, ski boats and remote controlled scale models of Mirabella V, all housed in a garage built into the stern, whilst her running rigging stretches for about 6.5 kilometres (4 miles) and comprises 110 items.
The crew boats are stored forward of the mast in two large storage hatches, which, when the boats are being used to ferry crew ashore, will be filled with water, one being a Jacuzzi and the other a swimming pool complete with a man made current for those wishing to swim like a fish against the current.
Ian Perryman, Manufacturing Technical Manager at VT Shipbuilding, Portsmouth stated: "Our welders are well versed in using Kemppi welding equipment, they are the backbone of our MIG welding in the yard, so this project was successfully completed without any problems and with very high quality welds." John Frost, Director Sales and Marketing at Kemppi said: "Mirabella V's is a high technology, high specification pioneering yacht built using sophisticated calculations.
At Kemppi, we apply the same principles of pioneering, our technology input as well as welding, marketing and design expertise produces welding equipment that the market demands.
On top of that we provide the after sales to support this, in this case Rapid Welding and Industrial Services Ltd, our dealer in Hampshire, who provided the necessary technical product support through their permanent facilities in VT Shipbuilding's yard in Portsmouth, maintaining and servicing our welding equipment throughout the yard, both with technical and service backup supported by comprehensive spare parts storage.
To enable them to provide this level of service, we in turn support them through training and the provision of technical knowledge.
Just as Mirabella V will provide first class facilities for her clients in the future ".
