Using a CVD thick-film diamond led to an extremely innovative development in diamond-based cutting materials that looks like PCD cutting material, but is a pure polycrystalline diamond.

With KD1405 - a CVD thick-film diamond - Kennametal is introducing a new and extremely innovative development in diamond-based cutting materials, which looks like PCD cutting material, but is in fact pure polycrystalline diamond without any binder phase constituents KD1405 comprises a carbide-backed, polycrystalline diamond coating which is applied by means of a CVD process

In an optimised brazing process the TFD segments, which have been cut to the required size, are brazed onto a carbide substrate.

The approximately 0.5mm thick diamond coating consists of pure diamond without any binder phase and is characterised by extremely intensive diamond grain growth.

This gives KD1405 superior wear resistance compared to polycrystalline diamond.

The intergrown diamond crystals are, unlike PCD, arranged in longitudinal direction and form the texture which is typical of diamond.

By subsequent grinding and lapping an extremely high-quality surface finish is produced.

KD1405 is particularly suitable for machining non-ferrous materials in smooth and intermittent cutting operations.

Highest productivity, best-possible surface finish and high-grade machining accuracy and precision are guaranteed.

KD1405 is not only offered offered for various standard Kennametal programmes, but also to meet special requirements.
