Water jet cutting improved parts profiling
When a mining equipment manufacturer invested in a waterjet cutting machine, not only did it make profile cutting a lot easier and more accurate, the company was also able to diversify.
When Mine Mechanisation and Equipment (MM and E) of Carletonville, South Africa invested in a KMT Waterjet Systems powered waterjet cutting machine, not only did it make profile cutting for its mining machinery a lot easier and more accurate, it also allowed the company to diversify into totally different industries.
The versatility of the waterjet system, powered by a KMT Waterjet Systems pump, is such that Mine Mechanisation and Equipment is able to use the machine to cut marble and granite table tops for a new furniture making venture.
It can also cut mild steel and stainless steel components for its mining machinery as well as cut brass and other non-ferrous materials into intricate shapes for another area of diversification - sign making! The new machine, manufactured by Knuth, has a 6metre x 2metre cutting table and twin cutting heads.
Powered by a KMT Streamline SL-IV 50HP Intensifier producing up to 3,600 bar/52,000 psi, the integral abrasive cutting system is monitored by a fully automatic Abrasive Management System (AMS).
This controls the accuracy and stability of abrasive flow into the waterjet, leaving the operator free to look after the actual cutting process.
Technical Manager at MME is Cyril Peters, who was very keen to praise the machine and particularly the pump.
"The KMT pump is perfect for the job," he enthused.
"It is much quieter in operation than others we have compared it with and utterly reliable.
It has been in operation for about six months now and has given absolutely no problems." MM and E also has a plasma cutting machine but it is rarely used nowadays since the waterjet was installed.
Peters continued: "All our operators prefer to use the waterjet machine because it is much easier and more pleasant to use than the plasma.
The results are also much better.
You can't compare the quality of the two systems and of course you can't cut granite with plasma." Knuth South Africa, based in Johannesburg, supplied the machine to MM and E and they are very particular in only supplying KMT pumps to customers.
Ludwig Oellermann of Knuth explained: "In business it is critical to understand that relationships are very important.
When I first started dealing with KMT they gave me training in Germany and when I saw the back up they offer I realised that was the way to go.
I also get excellent backup from KMT in the UK so I am able to pass this on and provide a first class service to my customers.".
