As part of a US$200 million expansion of New Venture Gear's transfer case factory in New York, the company has purchased an end-of-line test facility from British manufacturer, Geo Kingsbury Machine Tools A transfer case transmits power to both axles in four-wheel drive vehicles

NVG's cases are delivered mainly to its joint owners, Chrysler and General Motors, with some also going to Ford and BMW.

Three cases are tested by the new 12.5 tonne stand, two for automatic transmissions and one for vehicles with manual gear change.

After final assembly, the palletised transfer case is automatically loaded from a conveyor for testing.

Input and output drive spindles are mounted on linear slides to facilitate engagement with the case.

Automatic filling with oil prior to testing and subsequent emptying is from four 200 litre tanks.

A 75kW input AC electric motor and twin 37kW output motors, all variable speed, then subject the case to a series of pre-programmed tests in the speed range from zero to 4,000 rev/min, with a maximum torque of 136Nm.

Noise analysis is performed in conjuction with a single-point laser vibrometer.

A 160 litre hydraulic unit powers clamping, locating and pallet transfers.

Monitoring and control is by an Allen Bradley Series 5 programmable logic controller.

Testing is completed in a cycle time of about one minute, after which cases which have passed are marked accordingly and automatically unloaded to continue their journey by conveyor.
