Gantry-type VMC brings agility to 5-axis
work
A gantry-type, vertical-spindle machining centre with integrated fourth and fifth axes provided by a 280mm diameter rotary table on a +/-115 degree swivelling trunnion machines complex parts.
A gantry-type, vertical-spindle machining centre with integrated fourth and fifth axes provided by a 280mm diameter rotary table on a +/-115 degree swivelling trunnion has been introduced by the German manufacturer, Hermle Designated C 600 U, it is available in the UK through sole agent, Geo Kingsbury Machine Tools, Gosport

Pick-up spindle lathe has hexapod features
A new, hanging-spindle, vertical turning lathe (VTL) has been introduced by Index on which the spindle head is able to move freely in three dimensional space.
The machine is intended for 5-axis CNC machining of complex components weighing up to 300kg, such as moulds, dies and aerospace parts within a 450mm cube, although the X-axis extends to 600mm.
For machining of graphite EDM electrodes, various extractor units may be specified.
Acceleration of 5m/s2 to 35m/min traverse rate in all linear axes, and 25 rev/min in the rotary axes, provide the rapid motions necessary for economic production of multiple parts, chip-to-chip time being around 5.5 seconds.
Footprint of the machine is compact at 4.5m2.
As with other Hermle 5-axis machines, the C 600 U is constructed on a mineral casting bed for maximum stability.
The bed has a patented arrangement of three staggered linear guideways, one being central to, and set back from, the outer two.
This effectively halves the span and gives stable Y-axis traverse owing to three-point support combined with a single drive unit in line with the central carriage on the gantry.
There are three options of water-cooled, AC spindles from 10,000 rev/min/25kW/159Nm to 40,000 rev/min/10kW/6.5Nm to suit diverse applications from contouring moulds out of tool steel to high speed machining of light alloys for the aerospace industry.
