Bigger envelope vertical-spindle machining centre
The new, Spanish-built Kondia ZM-99 vertical-spindle machining centre from Geo Kingsbury MHP has a working envelope more than 50 per cent larger than the CM60-MA model which it replaces.
Subcontract machinists Staffordshire Precision Engineering, Newcastle-under-Lyme, says that its lathe is the first on site with driven tooling.
The investment is in particular to fulfil a new aerospace contract, and in general to provide extra turning capacity for mill-turning complex parts in batches up to 30-off for the automotive, scientific instrumentation, computer, food and pharmaceutical industries.
Another subcontractor, Autofour Precision Engineering, which specialises in manufacturing high accuracy turned parts up to 50mm diameter in batches of 10- to 200-off for the defence industry, also bought its MHP lathe on the back of new business.
Mainly employing sliding-head lathes, the company has two fixed-head models, an Index ABC and now the MHP lathe, both supplied by Geo Kingsbury.
The new lathe, also with live tooling in every turret station, is for carrying out second operations on parts coming from the ABC.
The third MHP65 is going to the Shipley plant of CarnaudMetalbox Engineering (UK), a major manufacturer of equipment for the canmaking industry worldwide.
It is currently redesigning the rotary tooling that forms the base of aluminium cans to reduce their weight and improve stackability.
The MHP lathe is for hard turning the new tooling and was selected partly for its rigid construction.
CarnaudMetalbox is also an Index lathe user.
