German machine tool builder Hermle's trading figures for 2004 show a turnover of EUR 142 million - the second highest figure the company has ever recorded.

Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle, Gosheim, the German manufacturer of machining centres and universal milling machines, has published its trading figures for 2004 They show a turnover of EUR 142 million - the second highest figure the company has ever recorded

Compared with 2003, domestic sales were up 6.8% while exports, including to the UK through sole agent, Geo Kingsbury Machine Tools, UK, were 28% higher.

Hermle employs 614 staff and is a highly profitable business with a working capital of EUR 88 million.

The company is in the unusual and enviable position of having zero borrowings.

More than 17,000 Hermle machines are in use worldwide.

Franz-Xaver Bernhard, CEO, commented at a world dealer meeting in June, "We have purchased a 50% share of a company in Munich that works exclusively on developing innovative techniques for very complex machining".

"I cannot elaborate at this time, but further announcements will follow".

" In order to intensify our activities in the Chinese market, we have opened an office in Shanghai and another office in Beijing is in the planning stage".

"Our own employees will now distribute and service Hermle products in China in parallel with our long-standing business partner, Freeson Co" Bernhard added: "Goals for 2005 include introducing further options for automating Hermle machines with new pallet systems, robotic configurations and secondary machining possibilities.".
