CNC mill turn centre takes 160 toolholders

A Geo Kingsbury Machine Tools product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Oct 31, 2005

A large tool capacity is not necessarily for complex workpieces, but more the requirement for duplicate 'sister' tooling or for reducing cycle times.

The G250 is based on the tried and tested Index system with its modular design.

The motor milling spindle produces speeds of 12,000 rev/min (grease lubrication) and up to 18,000 rev/min (oil-air lubrication).

But at a closer look, you will see at once how far current customer requirements have been taken into account by Index with this further development: As with the turn mill centers G160 and G400, the motor milling spindle is based on the standard unit X-, Y- and 360 deg B- axis.

The G250 is additionally equipped with a 360 deg B-axis driven by a torque motor.

This axis can thus be used as an actual feed axis for a 5-axis interpolation.

* Magazine with 160 tool holders - another unique selling proposition of the G250 is the newly developed tool magazine.

With traditional tool magazines, the number of tools per magazine disk is limited to 20, especially in case of large tools such as HSK63.

For some customer requirements, even a double magazine with 40 tools is not sufficient.

These requirements are not as much due to the complexity of the workpieces but rather to the necessity of reducing the cycle times.

The newly developed tool magazine now includes 4 disks with 40 tool holders each, which means a total of 160 holders.

The functional principle of the magazine, however, is as easy as can be.

Similar to a Scara robot, a gripper picks or feeds the tools.

There are two possibilities of feeding the tools into the magazine: The tool is picked, read and put down simultaneously with the productive time.

The alternative: In case of an initial set-up, the picking of 160 tools would take rather a long time.

Therefore, the unit can also be loaded manually from the front.

Speaking of the front, Index deliberately places the tool magazine left of the machine.

The accessibility of the machine is not restricted and the distance to the magazine remains short.

Even the possibility of feeding bars from the side is maintained.

An important factor, since bars are used more and more frequently when working with turn mill centers.

The advantages offered by the G250 with the new tool magazine in summary: * B-axis driven by a torque motor, i e, an actual feed axis for 5-axis interpolation.

* Main and counter spindle of identical design for complete machining.

* Reduction of cycle times by simultaneous operation of main and counter spindle.

* Y/B-axis for inclined, off-center drilling and milling.

* Tool magazine with four disks, i e, a total of 160 tool holders.

* Feeding the tools simultaneously with the productive time as well as manual loading.

* Good accessibility of the machine, short distance to the tool magazine.

* Bar feed from the side possible.
