One of the oldest engineering companies in the world, SHW, which was established in Germany in 1365 to produce pig iron and now manufactures large-capacity machining centres, has appointed Gosport-based Geo Kingsbury as its sales and service agent in the UK The machine tool division dates back to 1940, at which time it was in the vanguard of one-hit production with its philosophy of machining cubic workpieces on multiple sides in a single set-up

Today, the smallest production centre that SHW offers has a working envelope of 2.0 x 1.3 x 1.3m, whilst the largest travelling-column machine has a 30m X-axis and is powered by a 60kW spindle.

All are normally supplied in 5-axis configuration.

Typical applications are to be found in the aerospace industry as well as for machining rolls for paper-making machinery, diesel engines for ship propulsion and power generation, and large tools and dies.

There are even twin-column arrangements for making parts for cranes and large off-road vehicles.
