Flameproof flowmeter offers ultimate protection

A Krohne product story

A competitively priced, explosion-protected signal converter in a flameproof housing opens up a wide range of flow measurement possibilities.

A competitively priced, explosion-protected signal converter in a flameproof housing is being launched by Krohne for use with its H250 and H54 variable area flowmeters.

The M10 EEx d converter opens up a wide range of flow measurement possibilities using H250 and H54 primary measuring sections in plants that adopt a flameproof safety concept where highly explosive and/or volatile solvents are being used.

The new flameproof signal converter is an all electronic, fully programmable compact device with a 3 line 12-digit display, current output 4 - 20 mA two wire technology, switch and pulse output with HART communication.

It can be used to meter a variety of products within explosion Class IIc, T1 to T6.

The M10 perfectly complements Krohne 's existing intrinsically safe (EEx i) converter, the M9, which is designed to prevent the ignition of hazardous gases.

In intrinsically safe devices (EEx i), construction and layout of the electronics together with a limited power consumption of the electronic unit prevent the ignition of hazardous gas atmospheres, whereas in flameproof devices (EEx d), the housing is designed to contain an internal explosion.

Both safety requirements can now be met with the M9 and M10 displays.

The M10 can be configured by means of a HART handheld communicator, a PC, or from a control station, and the information stored on the converter, including the name of the product and its properties, can be read during operation via HART or the menu.

The two wire design of the M10 VA meters offers many advantages, including reduced cabling and installation costs and lower power consumption, and their compact footprint makes them easy to install in production plants.

The new H250 and H54 M10 can be used for the flowmetering of clean homogenous gases, steam or liquids in pipelines up to DN 150.

The process is low-cost and offers a high degree of accuracy and reliability, requiring only short inlet and outlet runs.

Other typical applications would be the measurement of UHP water, liquid hydrocarbons and other non-conductive products, as well as the metering of traditionally problematical products such as aggressive chemicals.

They can also be used for batching processes, tank filling operations and for the monitoring of cooling-water circuits, where they can be used to initiate an alarm signal when the flow goes above or below set limit values.

Since their introduction almost 80 years ago, Krohne's variable area flowmeters have evolved from purely mechanical devices into advanced versatile systems.

They deliver accurate and reliable results for both liquids and gases and can be utilised in the widest range of applications including chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries, analysis and process engineering.

They are particularly popular in the water treatment and food industries.

The H250 variable area flowmeter is designed for water flow rates up to 100,000 litre/h whereas the H54 can cater for water flow rates up to 150,000 litre/h.
