1950s trollies replaced on Halewood's cranes

The modernisation division of Konecranes UK based at East Kilbride in Scotland recently won the contract to upgrade some of the plant at Jaguar's Halewood plant in Merseyside.

The modernisation division of Konecranes UK based at East Kilbride in Scotland recently won the contract to upgrade some of the plant at Jaguar's Halewood plant in Merseyside.

This is in addition to ongoing modernisation projects that Konecranes UK is undertaking at the same location.

Part of the work is now completed and involved the replacement of an old open winch type trolley on a 1962 vintage crane with a modern Konecranes SM trolley, which has Dynahoist and Dynac Invertor variable speed control fitted and the long travel rail system.

Additionally the Konecranes team upgraded the existing radio systems and replaced the long-travel drives with Konecranes totally enclosed transmissions and DyanAC Inverter variable speed control, along with other sundry items and this work was completed in April 2001.

Further work involving replacing theold winch machinery with Konecranes modern SM Spacemaker trolleys on two cranes along with new DynA range invertorcontrols on all motions is scheduled to be completed in August 2001.

Speaking of the Jaguar modernisation projects, Gordon Adie, Konecranes UK MD said,"This is yet another example of a customer achieving excellent economies of expenditure with extended life and performance returns for existing equipment.

Not only can we extend the life of an existing crane, but we can upgrade its performance by the fitting of our new technology and most importantly improve safety." To date the value of the modernisation work at Halewood is in excess of ?700,000.
