When a major automotive manufacturer wanted to reduce it's production costs, it was not at first obvious that increasing its training expenditure in damage awareness would do just that.

When a major British Midlands Automotive manufacturer wanted to reduce it's production costs, increasing training expenditure was perhaps not the most traditional solution Over a period of months Knowledge College experts coached production staff in Damage Awareness

Normally a topic that is washed over at inductions or team briefs, Knowledge College created an engaging instructive and participative session including: * Customer Focus.

* Quality Control.

* Causes of Damage.

* Tools and Tool Boxes.

* Track Equipment and Manipulators.

* Types of Damages.

* Bad Practice.

* Preventative Measures.

* Dress Code.

* Cost of Damage.

* Responsibility.

Essential to this programme is the fact that the staff involved were kept active, their jobs involve a lot of physical movement and dumping them in a classroom for any length of time was not really an option.

Contents included assessing the dress code of a mannequin, identifying ways in which damage can be created, looking around the rework area and assessing how the vehicle damage was caused.

It must be said that most of the 1,800 people trained were amazed and embarrassed at the extent of the harm done to brand new vehicles on the production line.

Of course true success came from looking at the reduction in rework costs, two months after the training started the costs were reduced by over GBP 33,000 (US$56,000), giving a massive return on investment and sparking the launch of a major training programme in other key areas.
