Moulds changed automatically in under 15 min
A quick mould change system from Krauss-Maffei is helping automotive components supplier, R-TEK, to keep ahead of the demanding requirements of its customers.
A quick mould change system from plastics machinery manufacturer, Krauss-Maffei is helping automotive components supplier, R-TEK to keep ahead of the demanding requirements of its major automotive OEM customers.
R-TEK has about 90 moulds in active use and mould changes are frequent.
Fast change times are critical for continuously high output, and with the quick change system in operation, mould changes are achieved and full production resumed in less than 15min.
Developed in conjunction with Staubli, the quick change system has sharply reduced the impact of mould changing time on unit costs.
"We change moulds ten to 15 times a day," said R-TEK's plant manager, Peter Watson.
"So a highly effective, tried and tested mould changing system like this one is very important to us." R-TEK is a subsidiary of Kasai Kogyo Company in Japan and has an UK base at Washington, Tyne and Wear.
The company produces a range of injection moulded components with different surface finishes for automotive interiors such as pillar and door trim.
"We are strongly concentrated in certain products and supply these in high volumes," added Watson, when explaining the essential conditions for just-in-time supply to customers such as Nissan and Honda.
R-TEK operates machines from 1500kN to 20MN.
During 2000, R-TEK added a third Krauss-Maffei KM 1600-1800 MC machine fitted with a Sepro robot system.
The fast cycle times, high plastification performance and high uptime availability were key factors in R-TEK's decision to choose Krauss-Maffei machines.
Their two-platen design means that even the high tonnage machines are extremely compact, freeing up extra space for peripheral equipment.
