QuickSwitch makes the running in pipe extrusion
Changing pipe dimensions on the fly saves costs and boosts flexibility
QuickSwitch dimension-change systems have been operating smoothly in polyolefin pipe extrusion for several years.
Now Krauss-Maffei is offering all the advantages of QuickSwitch for PVC pipe extrusion.
The first PVC QuickSwitch systems are already in operation.
QuickSwitch changes the diameter and wall thickness of extruded pipe, at the touch of a button, without stopping the production line.
Core QuickSwitch components were extensively modified for PVC processing.
The pipehead, for example, was completely reengineered.
The new QuickSwitch PVC pipehead has a spider-type mandrel support with a movable pin that run outs or retracts in the direction of extrusion.
The cooling system for the calibration basket intake zone was also adapted to the special requirements of PVC pipe production.
The calibration basket, a key component in a QuickSwitch extrusion line, changes diameter steplessly across the whole range specified for that line.
QuickSwitch advantages now available for PVC pipe production include savings in raw material and labour costs, higher line productivity and more flexibility to respond to market changes.
Changing pipe diameter or wall thickness on a conventional pipe extrusion line means stopping the line, resetting various components and then restarting the line.
Reject product is unavoidable.
In the case of PVC pipe, the extruder and the pipehead have to be cleaned using a purging compound prior to stopping the line.
Stopping the line for a dimension change inevitably generates costs.
A QuickSwitch dimension change, by contrast, takes only a few minutes and the line is not stopped.
The cost of wasted raw material is reduced to a short length of pipe extruded during the changeover.
QuickSwitch reduces the length of time when the line is unproductive, boosting capacity utilisation and productivity.
Conventional dimension changes are time-consuming and labour-intensive.
The labour effort on a QuickSwitch system is reduced to pressing a button.
Because QuickSwitch makes fast, low-cost dimension change a reality, producers can cut order lead times and produce even small batches at very competitive prices.
