Helping cut power consumption in extrusion

A Krauss-Maffei (UK) product story

The cost of electricity for industrial consumers in Europe has surged in recent years.

The cost of electricity for industrial consumers in Europe has surged in recent years.

In the plastics industry, energy-efficient manufacturing systems are moving to centre stage as a tool for controlling manufacturing costs.

In addition, by signing the Kyoto Protocol, industrial countries committed to making significant reductions in CO2 emissions.

The targets will only be reached if all sectors of the economy make substantial efficiency improvements.

The Krauss-Maffei Ecopac is a package of products and services that help to reduce energy consumption in extruders and extrusion lines.

One example is the flap unit Krauss-Maffei developed to reduce heat loss from extruder processing units.

Research showed temperature peaks over the blow-off dome of the heating/cooling system for an extruder barrel, although it was insulated.

With Krauss-Maffei's flap unit installed over the blow-off dome, heat losses are reduced and total energy consumption sinks.

Trials have shown that these measures to reduce heat loss in no way affect the quality and properties of the extruded profile.

The flap unit can be retrofitted on already installed Krauss-Maffei 32D extruders.

The investment will pay for itself in between 18 and 30 months, depending on extruder size.

Extruder drive systems also offer potential for energy savings.

Under normal operating conditions, synchronous three-phase motors are significantly more efficient than DC motors.

Higher energy efficiency equates with lower operating costs.

With Krauss-Maffei 32D profile extruders, the extra purchase cost usually amortizes in under two years.

Reducing heat loss and using the most efficient drive technology can cut power consumption substantially.

On a KMD 90-32D profile extruder, for example, total power consumption can be reduced by over 15% without any reduction in output.

Krauss-Maffei continues to work on solutions that will increase the energy efficiency of its machinery.
