An electric mould carrier features extremely robust and low-maintenance electric drive systems and gives easy access and freedom of movement for the operator.

Mould carrier performance is one of the factors that impacts on the productivity of PUR processing plant Shorter cycle times thanks to fast, simultaneous movements help to improve mould carrier performance, as do robust, reliable drive systems that minimize downtime and increase system availability

Krauss-Maffei has developed a revolutionary new electric mould carrier.

The extremely robust and low-maintenance electric drive systems compare very favourably with other mould carrier concepts.

With no hydraulic drives, operation is energy efficient and clean.

Easy access and freedom of movement for the operator are part of the system's excellent ergonomics.

The electric mould carrier is opened and closed by a robust, purpose-built belt drive capable of high-speed movements.

The drive shaft also acts as the constant-velocity shaft ensuring exactly parallel movements at all times.

This simple design is insensitive to shock and vibration.

Maintenance effort is lower than for other drive concepts, like toothed belts, chain drives or circulating spindle drives.

The mould carrier frame, or tower, can be tilted by means of drive motors and a sprocket-sprocket combination.

Tilt movements of up to 30 deg in either direction from the mid-position are possible.

The two electrically-driven mould fixing platens also have great freedom of movement.

The top platen can be tilted steplessly from 0 to 90 deg, the bottom platen from 0 to 45 deg.

The extra mobility makes the operator's job of inserting blanks or skins in the moulds.far easier.

It also improves part removal ergonomics.

Each of the two platens is driven by two electric motors to avoid unbalanced drive torques.

Krauss-Maffei's new mould carrier is fitted with resolver drives - the position sensor systems are integrated in the motors themselves.

Because the signals need not be processed by the machine control system, very fast movements and speed changes become possible.

Resolver drives also make set-up easier, because any mould carrier movement can be programmed with a simple-to-use teach function.

Currently, the main application for electric mould carriers is backfoaming vehicle instrument panels.

Krauss-Maffei is currently working to expand the application range to other large-area PUR parts.
