Kistler Instruments has introduced its Type 4503A torque sensor, which can measure peak and average operating torques with a high degree of accuracy.

Kistler Instruments has added the Type 4503A dual range torque sensor to its range of torque sensors The Type 4503A can measure peak and average operating torques with a high degree of accuracy

Extreme ratios of high peak to moderate operating torque occur, for example, during starting and abrupt deceleration or braking of presses and elevators.

Torsional vibration encountered in combustion engines, pumps and compressors can also generate potentially damaging peak loads.

Kistler explained to manufacturingtalk that to measure peak values, conventional sensors have to be designed to withstand the peak torque without overload damage.

The result is that the signal resolution is inadequate for accurate measurement at the much lower levels of torque experienced during normal operation.

The Type 4503A dual-range sensor overcomes this problem by being sufficiently robust to withstand the peak torque.

It also has two independent ranges: a peak range and a second, lower range and the resolution to provide accurate measurement at the much lower operating torque.

Models with rated torques between 0.2Nm and 5,000Nm are available, with the option of range ratios of 10:1 or 5:1 from 1Nm.

Accuracy is +/-0.1% of the peak torque range and +/-0.2% of the lower operating torque range.

An optional version offers an enhanced linearity of 0.05%.

Power is supplied and the measurement signals transferred between the rotating shaft and the case without contact - making the new sensors suitable for high operating speeds of up to 50,000 rev/min.

The DC supply and the calibrated signal outputs of +/-10V facilitates integration into existing test stand systems, said Kistler.

There is also a serial data interface available.
