7-axis robot raises gravity die-casting
quality

Robot fitted with end-of-arm ladle tool is used to reduce waste and ensure pouring consistency in gravity die-casting and avoid oxide debris being re-introduced into the melt.

KUKA Robotics Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of industrial robots, has been selected by C M H Manufacturing of Lubbock, Texas, USA, to provide 7-axis robot for aluminum ladling applications The 6-axis KUKA robot is fitted with an end-of-arm tool to create a 7-axis ladling robot to be used for pouring molten metal

The robot's 7th axis gives it an additional 360 degrees of rotation allowing it to pour the molten metal consistently and then clean the ladle of leftover oxide waste by inverting the ladle to remove the waste.

"C H M is helping manufacturers around the world with high yield high throughput casting automation, and the servo controlled ladle is the latest of their innovations," said Joe Campbell, director of strategic alliances for KUKA Robotics Corporation.

"When we needed a 7-axis robot to solve this waste issue we immediately chose KUKA robots for their reliability, flexibility and performance," said John Hall, president of C M H Manufacturing.

The aluminum ladling application's 7th axis resolves aluminum casting manufacturers serious issue with part integrity.

Without the 7th axis oxide debris continues to build and be re-introduced into the molten metal.

With the additional rotation capabilities the metal composition remains pure and part integrity is not compromised.
