Britain's top metal spinning company has chosen Kuka Automation + Robotics to supply a high-technology robot cell for polishing a wide range of components.

Metal Spinners has partially automated its polishing facility at its Newcastle-upon-Tyne headquarters which boasts the largest range of metal spinning capabilities in Europe.

The compact Kuka cell incorporates a versatile KR125 robot which is equipped with a special compliant head that accurately controls the application of pressure of the polishing tool.

It is being used to produce a high-quality finish on a variety of components up to 850mm in diameter for manufacturers in the food, medical and pharmaceutical industries in the UK and overseas.

Kuka has also incorporated a novel RFID (Radio Frequency ID) system to simplify and speed up changeovers between different component configurations.

When the component is loaded onto the turntable, the RFID tag is identified by the control system which then sets the robot to run.

Metal Spinners, established for over 50 years, believes the move towards automation will not only further enhance the quality of its products but also improve working conditions for staff that previously polished components by hand on manipulators.

"It means a higher degree of polished finish, greater repeatability and better efficiency.

In addition, from a health and safety perspective, it significantly reduces exposure to vibration white finger," commented managing director Roger Brookes.

"Throughout the project, we were very impressed by the partnership forged with Kuka to develop the concept.

Their technical support has been good and they were extremely keen to produce the best solution possible," he added.

It is the latest robotic polishing cell to be supplied by Kuka following a recent installation for Airbus UK at its Filton factory where a robot is being used to polish aircraft wing access panels to remove patterns left by cutting tools.
