Robot demonstrated 3D vision at 'Open Days'
Around 80 visitors attended a series of technology open days, which unveiled the latest developments in robotic visions systems including a 3D vision system.
A series of technology open days, which unveiled the latest developments in robotic visions systems, have been hailed a success by hosts KUKA Automation and Robotics and Cognex.
Around 80 visitors attended the event at KUKA's headquarters in Halesowen, West Midlands, UK, to see a wide variety of automation concepts including the first KUKA robot to use a 3D vision system.
One of the most popular demonstrations was KUKA's RoboInspect mobile cell, which has been commissioned by a top aircraft manufacturer.
It has been specially designed to automate the inspection of test coupons which are used to check drill hole parameters for airframe components.
The cell incorporates a 2D vision system which scans the coupon to determine the exact co-ordinates of the drilled holes.
These are then transferred to the robot program via KUKA's vision software.
The KUKA KR16 robot guides an inspection probe into each hole in order before executing the requested test procedure.
The robot end-effector is equipped with a force/torque sensor which ensures the probe is guided without any interference.
All cell components are mounted onto a base frame which includes integral slots for forklift access, wheels for easy positioning and anti-vibration feet for process stability.
"The open days proved to be extremely successful and the feedback from visitors was very positive, prompting a substantial number of enquiries for assistance with a wide range of automation projects," commented Paul Richards, KUKA's general sales manager.
"Attendees said they found the event not only very informative on a technical basis but also from a commercial standpoint.
They were impressed by the versatile capabilities of the demonstration cells thanks to the latest developments in software and tools," he added.
Following the success of the technology open days, KUKA plans to organise a series of similar events at its West Midlands-based facility next year.
