Kuka Robotics sponsors winners

A KUKA Automation + Robotics product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Apr 25, 2007

KUKA Robotics Corporation has announced that the Oak Park Knights 1216 of Oak Park, Michigan sponsored by KUKA Robotics recently won the San Diego regional competition

The FIRST Robotics program teams engineers from businesses with high school students who work together to brainstorm, design and build a working robot to a prescribed engineering challenge that then participates in a robotic sports challenge against other teams.

The program gives students a hands-on and inside look at the engineering profession and is another portion of KUKA Robotics' Education Initiative.

"Everyone at KUKA is again proud of the Oak Park Knights 1216".

"We believe programs such as the FIRST Robotics competitions are excellent examples of projects that inspire and hopefully encourage students to pursue robotics and engineering as careers," said Stuart Shepherd, president of KUKA Robotics Corporation.

The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a varsity sport of the mind designed to help young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be.

The KUKA sponsored Oak Park Knights 1216 team competed in this year's "Rack N Roll" challenge where alliances of three teams compete against each other to place inner tubes on a central "Rack".

Accomplished inventor Dean Kamen founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in 1989 to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people.

Based in Manchester, N.H., FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, and engineering.

With the support of many of the world's most well-known companies, the not-for-profit organization hosts the FIRST Robotics Competition and FIRST Vex Challenge for high-school students, the FIRST LEGO League for children 9-14 years old, and the Junior FIRST LEGO League for 6 to 9 year-olds.
