Robot applies defroster to polycarbonate
windows

Automotive manufacturer is using highly accuracy robots in a flexible dispensing cell to apply defroster materials to a polycarbonate window glazing system.

Exatec of Wixom, Michigan, USA, is using high accuracy robots to integrate the company's latest defroster technology with automotive glazing systems Exatec said that previous ways of applying a defroster onto glass are difficult to use for polycarbonate glazing

A KUKA KR 30 HA high accuracy robot is being used in the cell to dispense a special material that will form the defroster on the polycarbonate window.

Exatec is doing this in expectation of an increased demand for polycarbonate glazing systems to replace glass in automobiles.

When combined with Exatec's coating technology, polycarbonate glazing provides a 40-60% decrease in weight, an improvement in safety, and a reduction in assembly processes.

Polycarbonate has glass-like weathering and abrasion resistance.

Stuart Shepherd, president of KUKA Robotics Corporation, said: "As use of polycarbonate in automotive designs increases, as industry predictions indicate, manufacturers will need the most accurate, flexible and cost effective methods to meet that demand".

"Exatec's glazing systems with our robots will meet and exceed those demands".

Exatec's system, using KUKA high accuracy robots, gives a high repeatability and a smoother path with better overall velocity control.

The KUKA KR 30 HA is a 6-axis robot with a payload capacity of up to 30kg, a reach of up to 2033mm and features an extremely accurate and smooth path ability with a minimum repeatability of 0.1mm.
