Leadership Trust Foundation Awarded Research Contract Ross-on-Wye based leadership development organisation, The Leadership Trust Foundation, has just been selected to work in partnership with the Man

Ross-on-Wye, UK, based leadership development organisation, The Leadership Trust Foundation, has just been selected to work in partnership with the Manufacturing Foundation and to lead its GBP 150,000 research project into 'Developing Manufacturing Leaders.' The Manufacturing Foundation is a not-for-profit think tank set up to conduct research projects and is funded by Advantage West Midlands (AWM), the Regional Development Agency Their research programme is targeted at providing high quality analysis incorporating relevant economic, sociological and managerial input that can lead to action and change

The Manufacturing Foundation has commissioned the research project, managed by The Research Centre for Leadership Studies at The Leadership Trust Foundation, on how today's manufacturing leaders perceive the key triggers of their learning about leadership, the mechanisms which have enabled them to embed this learning and which of these really make an impact.

The research project will follow a rigorous methodology that incorporates both qualitative and quantitative analysis.

By collecting perceptions and stories from existing industrial leaders a wide range of questions will be addressed and, hopefully, answered.

It is expected that many of the leaders will have worked for a number of organisations, both large and small, and the Manufacturing Foundation want to understand the importance of specific triggers and mechanisms in both the early, middle and later stages of their career.

As well as more conventional forms of leadership skill development, it is expected that some individuals will have encountered newer approaches.

These approaches may include development of spiritual and emotional intelligence, or their own empathy, wisdom and intuition.

The Manufacturing Foundation is also interested in researching how leaders have learned from other triggers eg life events, formal and informal mentors and even 'crises' like redundancy or takeover.

When the research is completed a full report will be published and a seminar to disseminate the findings will be held in the West Midlands.

The Leadership Trust Foundation has recruited two additional researchers to manage the project, which will be directed by the Deputy Director of The Research Centre for Leadership Studies, Dr Sharon Turnbull.

Dr Turnbull says "The project will bridge the gap between research and practice within the field of leadership, and will be one of the most extensive surveys of its kind.

Its findings will be of interest to industrial leaders within and beyond the manufacturing sector, and, we hope will provoke a great deal of interest and debate from all those concerned with the controversial debate on how to evaluate the return on investment in leadership development." James Bentley, Director of the Manufacturing Foundation says, "We are delighted to be working with The Leadership Trust Foundation.

They have the expertise to find out what really does help develop leaders in UK manufacturing industry.

Leadership skills are in short supply and the industry has no time to waste in developing tomorrow's leaders." Anyone interested in contributing to the project should contact Dr Sharon Turnbull on sharonturnbull@leadership.org.uk or telephone 01989 760705.
