A UK pilot training programme has resulted in Greater Manchester manufacturers experiencing an increase of up to 9% in productivity levels, compared to the UK average of 1.2%.

A significant number of Greater Manchester manufacturers are experiencing an increase of up to 9% in productivity levels, compared to the national average of 1.2%, thanks to their involvement in a pilot training programme aimed at employers in the area Recognising the need to retain quality staff when trading conditions are tough, many manufacturing businesses across the region have been up-skilling their workforces through the Greater Manchester Learning and Skills Council's (GMLSC) Employer Training Pilot (ETP)

Previously the manufacturing sector had been accused of dismissing the business benefits gained from investing in employee development.

But this certainly was not the case for Greater Manchester employers; they were concerned with releasing employees for training because of the implications of the resulting downtime.

That has all changed thanks to the range of employer incentives offered through the LSC's Employer Training Pilot.

In this final year of the pilot (2005 -2006), 57 of the regions manufacturing businesses have successfully engaged in training so far, taking advantage of wage compensation to help cover the costs of releasing staff for training, and negating resulting downtime.

With training well under way, many manufacturing businesses across Greater Manchester are starting to reap the numerous rewards resulting from an up-skilled workforce, including improved performance, a more efficient workforce, reduced waste and costs and a better quality product.

Remploy Packaging and Print, Wythenshawe, identified a number of measurable results following their involvement with ETP.

With the combined assistance of Union Learning funding and ETP, Remploy have seen their productivity increase from a gross profit margin of 49% to 58%.

And absenteeism has fallen from 8.5% to 5%.

And Remploy are just one example of the 57 manufacturing businesses enjoying the benefits of ETP training.

The downturn in manufacturing has meant businesses have needed to adapt and modify to remain competitive, and as such the need for versatile, motivated staff has become paramount.

ETP offers a flexible way to train staff that does not break the bank or stop production lines.

This can only be an attractive proposition for businesses in Greater Manchester.
