The installation of two Emag twin-spindle turning and ball-track milling machines fitted with four Hainbuch clamping heads has enabled GKN Driveline, to move hard turning and ball-track milling.

The installation of two Emag twin-spindle turning and ball-track milling machines fitted with four Hainbuch clamping heads has enabled GKN Driveline, Birmingham to move away from traditional grinding processes towards new, hard turning and ball-track milling techniques According to GKN Driveline project engineer Abu Mulla, the selection of the right equipment was critical in the success of the project

"We have two manufacturing cells that produce around half a million components per annum each.

So when we decided to replace our existing grinders with Emag VSC250 Twin KBG turning and ball-track milling machines, we knew the machines' workholding equipment had to be fairly robust as well as highly accurate." The components being processed are fixed outer races for side shaft assemblies destined for several leading automotive manufacturers.

All such components have to pass rigorous OEM manufacturing quality standards during all phases of design and production.

"I have to say that when Emag (UK) recommended the Hainbuch type SK/SKD clamping heads from Leader Chuck Systems of Birmingham, I wasn't aware of Hainbuch's excellent reputation.

But since they've been installed, all four chuck heads have been excellent." As well as improved concentricity and fast changeovers, users of Hainbuch clamping systems gain from high clamping accuracy, high rigidity and exceptional clamping forces.

Abu Mulla claims the accuracy of the equipment is especially useful to Birmingham-based GKN Driveline as concentricity of the outer races is critical.

In conclusion, he says: "We are more than pleased with the Emag-Hainbuch combination, especially considering the workload we subject them to.

This would probably cause problems for less substantial or reliable equipment.".
