Leica Geosystems Ships Wireless Leica T-Probe and Leica Laser Tracker to NASA Marshall Space Flight Centre

The Metrology Division of Leica Geosystems has announced the delivery of its wireless Walk-Around Leica T-Probe CMM solution and LTD800 Laser Tracker to the NASA Marshall Space Flight Centre in Huntsville, Alabama This shipment marks the sale of the 100th Leica T-Probe since its introduction to the metrology marketplace

The innovative Leica T-Probe ushered in a new standard for 6 Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) measurement and is known as the "Walk-Around" CMM.

Two NASA Laboratories at the Centre - Flight Robotics and Contact Dynamics Simulation - will utilise the universal laser tracking system for large-volume measurement tasks at their motion facilities.

Marshall Space Flight Centre is one of NASA's largest, most diversified installations.

The Marshall Centre deservedly takes the credit for many NASA engineering accomplishments, including the 1961 flight of the first US astronaut into space, the Apollo Moon missions, America's Space Shuttle fleet and the International Space Station.

The motion facilities at the Marshall Centre are used to test and evaluate avionics, docking and berthing systems.

NASA uses huge robots to simulate different aspects of docking and space maneuvering.

The laboratories will implement the Leica Laser Tracking system to inspect the robots' dynamic response to command moves.

The Leica Laser Tracker and the Leica T-Probe provide automated measurement capabilities and a very large operational measurement range that meet the critical challenges of NASA's motion verification applications.

For more than twenty years, the Leica Metrology Division has developed leading-edge measurement instrumentation and software that set metrology standards in aerospace, automotive and general engineering industries.

The company's comprehensive product line includes the entry-level Theodolite system, the traditional LTD600 build-and-inspect tracker and state-of-the-art LTD800/700 trackers working in tandem with Leica's innovative Local Positioning Technology (LPT) - the wireless, armless Walk-Around Leica T-Probe and high-speed Leica T-Scan hand scanner.
