London Ambulance now uses Heartstart FR2

A Laerdal Medical product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Feb 4, 2003

London Ambulance Service (LAS) uses Heartstart FR2 to help increase the number of lives saved.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) receives up to 38,000 emergency calls each year from adults experiencing chest pain.

To improve its response to cardiac arrest, and to improve the precision in the diagnosis of acute coronary syndromes, the LAS has introduced a Cardiac Development Strategy, at the 'heart' of which is the Heartstart FR2 automatic external defibrillator (AED) from Laerdal.

Paramedics take a primary response bag to every call that includes a uniquely developed bag containing the Heartstart FR2.

This bag, developed specifically for the LAS, contains a Heartstart FR2 with manual over-ride and ECG monitoring capability, adult and paediatric defibrillation pads and a spare battery for the defibrillator.

Consequently, patients can be treated immediately the ambulance responder arrives, saving valuable time, and ultimately increasing their chances of survival to discharge from hospital.

LAS front line crews carried out a structured trial over several months, in which automatic external and manual defibrillators were evaluated.

Laerdal's Heartstart FR2 proved to be the over-riding favourite, with the majority of crews stating that it was small, portable, lightweight and extremely easy to use.

As a result, over 500 have been supplied throughout the LAS and they are now on every frontline ambulance, all 11 motorbikes, the rapid response units and even the LAS latest emergency response units - the qualified ambulance technicians and paramedics on bicycles.

Mark Whitbread, LAS cardiac care development manager explains, "The introduction of the Heartstart FR2 has gone extremely smoothly and we were the first ambulance service in the world to have this combination of monitoring and paediatric defibrillation with the FR2".

""Monitoring is an essential part of the diagnosis of a heart attack.

"With the monitoring capabilities of the FR2, we can assess a patient?s condition from the minute we are with them and if they "go off" we can defibrillate immediately".
