Laerdal Medical 's campaign to help reduce sudden cardiac death in the UK has extended to the marine world!

Laerdal, leading supplier of emergency medical equipment, has just launched the HeartStart Marine Defibrillator to the yachting industry at the Southampton Boat Show Its next port of call is the Marine Trade Show in Windsor, from 19-20 October

Mel Matthews, Laerdal's marketing communications manager, explains why boat owners should consider having an on-board defibrillator, "In 80 per cent of sudden cardiac arrests, the heart goes into fibrillation, which means that instead of beating, it quivers".

"The only effective treatment for this is to shock the heart back into a regular beating pattern with a defibrillator".

"Without defibrillation, the chance of the patient's survival reduces by 10 per cent per minute".

"So the sooner defibrillation is administered, the better the prognosis".

"Out at sea, the probability of professional help reaching a boat within the first 2-3 crucial minutes is very remote".

"When people understand the risks, they realise that having a defibrillator at hand can mean the difference between life and death".

The HeartStart Marine Defibrillator is ideal for private boat owners and for larger vessels.

When the pads are placed on the patient's chest, the machine automatically assesses the heart's rhythm.

If the heart is in fibrillation, simple, audible instructions prompt the user to press a button that delivers a shock to the patient via the pads.

The defibrillator continues to assess the heart's rhythm and will advise further shocks if necessary until professional help arrives.

If defibrillation is administered within one minute of collapse, it can improve the patient's chance of survival by around 80 per cent.

Mel is delighted with the initial response from yacht owners.

She said, "We have fielded literally hundreds of enquires from yachting enthusiasts as a result of our campaign".

"Interest in the HeartStart Marine Defibrillator was phenomenal at The Boat Show and we are looking forward to introducing it to owners and operators of larger vessels at the Marine Trade Show".

In response to comments and feedback from boat owners, Laerdal has addressed all the issues that have previously made the ownership of an onboard defibrillator unrealistic.

Laerdal's HeartStart Marine Defibrillator is 100 per cent reliable, safe, robust, affordable and easy to use.

The HeartStart Marine Defibrillator can distinguish between a "moving platform" and heart movement, and even stand a taste of English weather, making it a feasible and realistic option for all sea-faring vessels.

A short course in first aid and defibrillator use is all that is necessary to enable an operator to save someone's life with a defibrillator.

The RYA first aid course is the ideal type of training to prepare skippers and crews.
